Summer Vacation

Hi everyone. It's been awhile so I thought I should check in and update my status. I decided to take some months off from my writing and regroup. It has been wonderful spending time with family and my beautiful grandchildren.

I have been watching our wildfire situation for weeks now here in British Columbia. Especially my former residence in Clinton in the BC Interior. They have been evacuated and the fire has been licking at the hills leading down to the valley where this quaint historical village sits. The Elephant Hill fire is the biggest of all the fires firefighters have been dealing with this summer and it just wont quit. It is comforting to know that so far everyone is safe and the town has been protected thus far.

I am starting to get itchy feet however and have started organizing my office and writing tasks. I'm ready to get back at it. Some changes have come my way in regards to my publishing status and I'm excited at the possibilities ahead.

Off to pick up the grandkids for a week of fun. We're taking them to Long Beach on the west side of the Island. I'll be back soon to start up my writing career. Cheers to you all.

KEEP ON KEEPING ON WRITING!

EARTH DAY

My post today is to honor Earth Day.

A day that is celebrated annually all over the world every year to support environmental protection, this year it is a political statement supporting science and opposing the policies of Donald J. Trump, President of the United States.

A day doesn't go by that the new President doesn't create controversy over some new appointment to his administration, or a change of policy that is detrimental to the people's well-being, The disturbing aspect of anything the President does or says, is his constant practice of saying one thing but doing another.

His changes to the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) is a huge testament to this behavior pattern.

President Trump replaced the head of the EPA with Scott Pruitt who was funded by oil industry lobbyists. Here is a man who is a disbeliever in climate change. A man who has tried to sue the EPA. A man who believes the EPA oversteps its boundaries. A man whose LinkedIn page describes him as an advocate against the EPA.

President Trump signed an executive order to roll back clean water regulations and to roll back regulations imposed on energy companies to protect the environment. He refused to ban a pesticide in food that is known to harm children's brains. He's allowed the use of lead ammunition on Federal lands and waters. The word 'science' was removed from the EPA's mission statement, etc. etc. etc...

And yet...today President Trump had this to say about his support of Earth Day:

"My Administration is committed to keeping our air and water clean, to preserving our forests, lakes, and open spaces, and to protecting endangered species."

and went on to say:

"We should remember that rigorous science depends not on ideology, but on a spirit of honest inquiry and robust debate."

My heart is heavy on this Earth Day. Our global planet does not recognize borders, what happens in one country affects us all. Clearly we've learned as President Trump reaches is first 100 days, that we don't listen to what he says, but instead watch what he does.

As a novelist whose writing is inspired by nature and whose stories always include mother nature in its tale, I was heartened by the Earth Day protests. We are all witnessing that people can make a difference. Voices can be heard. If we persist and educate, awareness will win out.

I'M BACK!

It's been awhile since I last posted. With time off for Christmas festivities in December and down with the flu in January, I can't believe we're into February. This makes me late with my best wishes to everyone for 2017. May you find happiness, peace, and love.

In a period where political unrest and uncertanty seems to dominate our thinking and social media, I've had time this past month to reflect on what's important to me. What's happening south of the border with our American allies and friends has impacted not only their own people, but those of us north and south of their borders and all over the world.

There are times when my husband and I have had to say: Enough is enough. Turn off the television news, stay away from social media and enjoy the day. On more than one occassion, I must admit, I've posted responses to what I think are ignorant or hateful comments, only to be ridiculed or told as a Canadian to mind my own business. In the end, I've concluded that anything I say to ignorant or hateful people, will not change their opinion. My opinion gets lost in the rhetoric. People get carried away with emotion and become irrational. I don't expect everyone to accept my opinion. Afterall, isn't that what democracy is? Freedom of thought and speech? I just wish it could be done with respect.

I've concluded what really counts, is action. I absolutely believe as the new administration of Mr. Trump moves forward, that what they do south of our border affects the whole world--it already has. I'm drawing in my horns on social media and turning to action. It's what we do that really counts.

So how does this politicized post tie into the fact that this blog is an Author site, usually dedicated to all things 'writing'?

Let me tell you. I'm an author who writes about women. Women who face tough situations and through all their struggles become empowered. This is my passion. How can I not be part of what I see as a wrongdoing, a deliberate attempt to put women back decades in their fight for equality.

In light of all the issues affecting peoples rights and women's rights in the US and with no idea of the eventual outcome and its effects, I intend to take action. Come March 8th, International Women's Day, I will join in a march, along with thousands of other people to support not only the rights for women, but for everyone, no matter their race, religion, or sexual orientation. I invite all of you to find a march in your neighbourhood and join in the fight.

During what will be tumultuous times with unforseen outcomes, I wish you peace for 2017.

And to all you writers, keep on keeping on writing.  Visit me at my Facebook page HERE.
